Whale Motor Inn - Narooma Experiences - Whale Watching & Montague Island (Barunguba)

Whale Watching & Montague Island (Barunguba)

You must visit Montague Island Nature Reserve and explore this unique island with its historic lighthouse built in 1881, the breeding colonies of penguins, the Australian and New Zealand fur seals and a breeding ground for 15 different bird species.

The island was originally managed from the 1800’s for lighthouse and weather recording duties. In 1953 it became a wildlife sanctuary and by 1987 the lighthouse was automated and the National Parks and Wildlife Service managed the park as a nature reserve from 1990.

The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service provides guided tours of this fascinating Island, which can be booked through the Narooma Visitors Centre.

Tours of the island include an inspection of the historic light station, the accommodation that was used by the original keepers and their families and fascinating stories are told on the aboriginal history. From the tour boat out to the island you are also likely to see dolphin pods, seals and humpback or southern right whales (September – early November).

There are several other charter boats that can take you whale watching, fishing or diving in the waters around Montague Island. It is truly a nature lover’s paradise.
